MANILA, Philippines – Two Filipinos ruled the adidas King of the Road (KOTR) 2012 in Singapore last Sunday, which attracted over 45,000 runners from all over Southeast Asia.
The adidas KOTR is a running championships spanning five countries within the Southeast Asian region and clocking in at an impressive 84-kilometer distance, making it the equivalent of two marathons.
The race was held in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and culminated in Singapore, with the 16.8-km race originating and ending at the city’s newest attraction, Gardens by the Bay.
Eduardo Buenavista and Mary Grace Delos Santos of the Philippines were crowned King and Queen of the KOTR.
Both Filipino runners finished first in the "closed" category, with Buenavista clocking in with a time of 53 minutes and 12 seconds, while Delos Santos finished the race with a time of one hour, one minute and 52 seconds.
Two runners from Thailand, Sanchai Namkhet (55 minutes, seven seconds) and Natthaya Thanaronnawat (one hour, four minutes and 18 seconds) were hot on their heels.
“I’m very happy with the adidas KOTR. It’s nice to see the global leader in running bring together passionate runners from all over the region,” Buenavista said in a statement. “The 16.8-km distance is distinctive from other running events, and I certainly would like to do it again.”
“I’m really proud to win again in Singapore’s championship race after coming first in the Manila leg,” said Delos Santso. “I have even achieved my personal best for today’s run.”
“The adidas KOTR served a great use in training for my next event, a full marathon in Manila in December. I would welcome coming back next year and competing at adidas KOTR again,” she added.
Melvin Wong and Ivan Low flew the Singapore flag high when they crossed the finish line in sixth and seventh position.
The adidas KOTR event passed through some of the most scenic and exciting landmarks each city has to offer. In Singapore, runners navigated through Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, the Esplanade, Arts Science Museum and the Singapore Flyer.
“Today, the spirit of ‘adidas is all in’ comes to life through the passion of all participating runners. To watch each runner aim to achieve their personal best across all five countries is truly an inspiration,” said Amit DasGupta, adidas brand director for Southeast Asia.
