Vazquez a 'Rubik's cube' for Gesta, says trainer

MANILA, Philippines – Vincent Parra, the trainer of Filipino lightweight Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta, is concerned about the fighting style of Mexico’s Miguel Vazquez, and likened him to a “Rubik’s cube.”

Gesta is in line to face Vazquez on December 8 for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight title, in a bout that will be on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight.

In what will be his first chance to fight for a world title, Gesta will be facing a physical disadvantage against Vazquez, who is taller and has a longer reach than the Filipino.

But Parra told Boxing Scene that they were more concerned about Vazquez’s fighting style.

“Vazquez is more of a Rubik’s cube. I see the guy in his last four or five fights. He’s a proficient boxer who makes you fight his fight,” he explained.

“He uses his jab and stays away from big punches. He makes guys headhunt and take them out of their gameplan. We’d make him fight our fight,” Parra added. “He’s a counter-puncher, but so are we, and we’re faster.”

Despite his concerns, Parra is confident and points out that Vazquez’s recent opponents were not at Gesta’s level.

“He has not faced anybody that would tell me he would demolish my guy. He gets away with a lot of holding. His opposition in the last doesn’t match up to Mercito’s talent level,” Parra said.

Although he is undefeated, Gesta will still most likely come in as the underdog against the more experienced Vazquez. Parra does not care about the odds, however.

“I don’t think anyone is giving us a shot. Vazquez has done what he’s had to do, but I’m not impressed,” he said. “I think my guy is a better athlete.”

“People talk about Mercito’s conditioning, and that’s fine, but when you put someone in front of him like Vazquez, you’ll see the best his kid has to offer,” he added.

Parra said Gesta will begin training for the Vazquez fight on November 1 at the Big Bear camp.
