MANILA, Philippines – Rumors of a possible Oscar de la Hoya comeback spread after the former world champion claimed he can still beat any decent junior middleweight boxer.
The retired boxer-now promoter said through his Twitter profile that he “can do some damage to any 54 pounder in the world, except Saul Canelo Alvarez.”
De la Hoya is currently the president of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), which manages a stable of boxing superstars including World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight champion Alvarez.
De La Hoya was a 6-division world champion who fought the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitaker and Arturo Gatti.
He was forced to retire after getting pummeled by Manny Pacquiao in April 2009.
