Orcollo finishes second in US Open

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino pool master Dennis Orcollo failed to sustain his momentum as he lost to Shane Van Boening of the United States in the finals of the 37th annual United States 9-Ball Open at the Holiday Inn in Virginia Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Van Boening defeated Orcollo 13-7 in the finals of the tournament.

Orcollo had beaten compatriots Efren “Bata” Reyes, 11-8, and Alex Pagulayan, 11-7, in the loser’s bracket to arrange the title showdown against the American.

The undefeated Van Boening, meanwhile, defeated Pagulayan, 11-5, for the first final berth in the winner’s side.

Van Boening pocketed the top prize of $25,000, while Orcollo went home with the runner-up purse worth $15,000.

Pagulayan and Reyes received $10,000 and $6,000 for placing third and fourth, respectively.

Other Filipinos who saw action in the US Open were: Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Ronato Alcano, Jose “Amang” Parica, Warren Kiamco, Carlo Biado, Santos Sambajon, Ramon Mistica, Israel Rota, Daniel Dagotdot and Reynaldo Campana.

The Filipinos’ campaign in the US Open 9-Ball tournament was supported by the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines, Puyat Sports, Bugsy Promotions, the Negros Billiards Stable, Hermes Sports Bar and Malungai Life Oil. -- By Marlon Bernardino
