MANILA, Philippines – Filipino featherweight Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista is reportedly being considered as a challenger to former world champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez of Puerto Rico.
According to Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer discussed the potential Bautista-Lopez bout with Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, the president of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), during their annual convention in Florida.
Bautista currently holds the WBO’s international featherweight belt, while Lopez was a former WBO featherweight champion.
“Aldeguer reportedly wants to stage the fight in Manila, buoyed by the initial success of the Pinoy Pride XVII card at the Mall of Asia Arena,” Nathanielsz reported.
Lopez, who has won a title at the super bantamweight division, is coming off a loss to Mexican boxer Orlando Salido last March, which saw him get knocked out in the 10th round.
Meanwhile, Bautista defeated Mexican brawler Daniel Ruiz in the undercard of Pinoy Pride XVII, winning via split decision after 12 rounds.
