MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Carmela Lee of Ayala Greenfield survived Rosalie Heo of Tagaytay Highlands, 4 and 2, yesterday to arrange a semifinal showdown with Christine Popp of Orchard in the ladies division of the Mizuno Tournament of Club Champions at Eagle Ridge’s Aoki course in Gen. Trias, Cavite.

Lee needed all the toughness when pushed to the limit by Heo as she advanced to the Final Four opposite Popp who made it all the way to the semis after topping the elimination round last Monday.

Maggie Rivera of Iloilo, the second seed, takes on Eun Sil-jang of Manila Southwoods, who turned back Vangie Apuhin of Valley 4 and 3 in another quarterfinals encounter, in the other match of the tournament co-presented by Mizuno, Inquirer Golf and Eagle Ridge.

In the men’s division, Manfred Guangko of Aguinaldo beat Larry Patnongon of Southwoods; Joey Solis of Tagaytay nipped Von Sarmiento of Royal Northwoods, 1 up; while Chito Laureta of Valley defeated Dennis Gonzales, 4 and 3 while Rodel Mangulabnan made short work of Aian Arcilla of Orchard, 5 and 3.

In the semis, Mangulabnan seeks a return trip to the finals against Solis while Guangko goes up against Laureta.

In the seniors semis set to played at the Faldo course like the men’s and ladies clashes, Romy Celestino of Mimosa faces Bong de Guzman of Luisita and Lakewood while Joson of Royal Northwoods battles Chito Servida of Orchard.

Joson, who lost last year’s finals to Lino Magpantay, edged Florene delos Santos of Southwoods; de Guzman won by default over Magpantay; Servida routed Ed Abesamis, 5 and 4 and Celestino downed Goody Ignacio of Camp John Hay.

Winners today will clash for the crown tomorrow at the Norman course where Eagle Ridge club champ Lawrence Celestino battles the winner of the semis duel between Kenneth Cano and Kris Etter today in the special division.
