MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light-heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones is favored to retain his title against Chael Sonnen when they fight in April, but the champion’s trainers still have reasons to be concerned.
In an interview with Sherdog, one of Jones’ coaches, Mike Winkeljohn, revealed what they are most concerned about in preparing for Sonnen. [http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Jon-Jones-Trainer-Sees-Chael-Sonnens-Pressure-as-His-Greatest-Strength-46773]
“He’s relentless,” Winkeljohn said of the former middleweight contender. “Pressure. He’s always going to be on you. He’s a smart guy. It’s that pressure, that pressure he comes to the table with.”
Winkeljohn said the result of the fight will depend on the approach that Sonnen takes.
“If the Chael Sonnen that shows up is relentless, it makes it a much harder fight. If it’s the Chael Sonnen that has shown up in a few other fights we’ve watched, it could be an easy fight,” he said.
“It just depends on which Chael Sonnen shows up. How aggressive, how strong he is,” Winkeljohn added.
Sonnen is moving up to light-heavyweight after losing to middleweight king Anderson “The Spider” Silva at UFC 148 last July.
Before fighting in April, Jones and Sonnen will first act as coaches in “The Ultimate Fighter.”
