MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Jorge Arce has reportedly started training for a potential bout against world super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire even if their fight has not yet even been finalized.
According to a report from Boxing Scene, Arce has been training in his hometown of Mexico City under Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain.
Arce is training at Beristain’s Romanza Gym along with Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez.
But a fight against Donaire has not been finalized as neither camp has agreed to a deal. Arce is reportedly asking for a larger purse, something that Donaire is not keen about.
If a fight does happen, Arce will most likely be the underdog against Donaire, who is a consensus top five pound-for-pound fighter and a front-runner for Fighter of the Year honors.
But this does not concern the Mexican fighter.
“Some will say that I’m crazy and so much more, but I have shut the mouths of critics several times in the ring,” Arce said. “Donair will be no exception. I will prepare even better next to Nacho Beristain.”
Arce and Donaire were reportedly close to an agreement for a fight earlier this year, but the Mexican fighter priced himself out of the bout.
Donaire wound up fighting Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka instead, defeating him via a ninth-round technical knockout last October 13 in California.
