MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Erik “El Terrible” Morales wants to fight one more time in his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico before hanging up his gloves for good.
Morales, who has won world championships in four different weight divisions, lost for the ninth time in his career last weekend when he was knocked out by Danny Garcia in the fourth round of their rematch.
After the bout, Morales was quoted by ESPN as saying that he wanted to fight one more time before retiring.
“This is my last fight in the United States. I want to say goodbye in Tijuana, Mexico,” Morales said.
The bout was in danger of being cancelled at the last minute after Morales was found to have tested positive for a banned substance.
Garcia, the reigning WBC, WBA and The RING light-welterweight champion, agreed to fight Morales despite the Mexican’s failed drug tests.
Garcia then proceeded to dominate Morales over the course of four rounds, landing his left hook with regularity before knocking out “El Terrible” for good in the fourth round with another huge left hook to the chin that nearly sent Morales out of the ring.
“Time passes everyone by,” Morales said after the fight. “I came to fight. I was ready. It’s early signs that it’s over.”
Morales has lost three of his last four fights, including his first bout against Garcia last March. His last victory came against Pablo Cesar Cano in September 2011.
