MANILA, Philippines – University of Sto. Tomas (UST) head coach Pido Jarencio has not yet decided on what his future with the Growling Tigers will be following the squad’s runner-up finish in the recently concluded UAAP Season 75 men’s basketball tournament.
Jarencio led the Growling Tigers to a 10-4 record in the elimination round and a berth in the Finals, where they were swept by the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Following their loss in the Finals, Jarencio said he will weigh his options on what he will do next. [http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/10/12/12/jarencio-weighs-options-after-devastating-loss]
Speaking with Joaquin Henson of the Philippine Star, Jarencio revealed that he has not yet come to a decision.
“I’m still thinking about it now. Maybe, I’ll think it over until January,” Jarencio said.
Right after the Tigers lost Game 2, Jarencio said he was approached by UST rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy.
“Fr. Rector was in the dressing room and talked to me about staying on. He encouraged me to prepare a budget until 2016, when UST will be the host school,” he said.
But Jarencio, who also works as an assistant coach for Petron Blaze in the PBA, said coaching in the UAAP is “very draining.”
“Honestly, I was thinking of resigning if we won the title,” he said.
But Jarencio emphasized that he was extremely proud of what his players achieved, especially as they flew under the radar in the pre-season.
“Players go out there only to bring honor to our school, nothing else. I’m proud of our team and what we’ve achieved,” he said.
