MANILA, Philippines – Jervy Cruz's solid performance in Rain or Shine’s 94-83 win over GlobalPort last Saturday earned him his first PBA Press Corps Player of the Week award.
The former University of Sto. Tomas (UST) standout registered career highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds in that game, according to PBA.ph -- enough to win the nods of the PBA scribes.
"Jervy is one player who has been very consistent for us and it (Best Player award) should not be surprising," said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
Guiao described Cruz as a hard worker even during practice.
"Whatever na mga pagkukulang niya he more than makes up for with hard work and perseverance. Kaya nga more often than not he rises to the challenge when called upon and that makes him a special player indeed," said the Elasto Painter mentor.
Aside from helping Rain or Shine improve to a 3-1 win-loss mark, Cruz also improved his average to 13.5 points. He is just behind teammate Jeff Chan, who averages with 23.2 points.
Cruz also paced his team in rebounds with an average of 9.5 boards.
"Huwag lang magbabago ang attitude niya at siguradong tuloy-tuloy ang improvement niya," said Guiao. "When he does that, I know he can only get better."
