MANILA, Philippines – Mixed martial arts (MMA) bad boy Nick Diaz is unlikely to get an outright welterweight title shot when he returns to action next year.
Diaz is serving a one-year suspension for testing positive of marijuana use. The suspension ends on Feb. 4, 2013.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White said Diaz will have to go through an eliminator before he could get a shot at the winner between UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre and Carlos Condit.
“When Diaz gets off suspension, he'll have a fight against one of the top guys at 170 pounds, and then we'll see what happens,” White said in Yahoo! Sports.
Diaz was supposed to fight St.-Pierre in UFC 143 last February, but was forced to take on Condit in an interim title fight after St.-Pierre suffered an injury in training.
Condit won the interim title by engaging Diaz in a tactical fight.
To make matters worse for Diaz, he failed his drug test after the bout.
