MANILA, Philippines – The University of the East Red Warriors needed two overtime periods to repulse the Technological Institute of the Philippines Engineers, 83-73, in the quarterfinals of the 10th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup last Saturday.
The Red Warriors banked on the imposing presence of Cameroonian Mustapha Arafat in the second overtime period to finally put away the Engineers at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium in Quezon City.
The Engineers forced the first over-time off TH Tumalip’s triple in the final five seconds of regulation to make it 63-all. A drive by Sean Paulo with 5.3 seconds left allowed TIP to force a second extension, 71-all.
But Arafat asserted his control in the second overtime, with his driving lay-up giving the Red Warriors a four-point cushion, 75-71, in the final three minutes.
The Red Warriors will join the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers in the semi-finals. JRU waylaid the National University Bulldogs, 76-59, in their own quarterfinal match-up. Mar Balagtas topscored for the Heavy Bombers with 12 points.
Commissioner Robert dela Rosa said semi-final action will begin on Friday at the Trinity University of Asia gym.
In the junior’s division, Hope Christian got 31 points from John Apacible as they swamped Chiang Kai Shek-B Dragons, 85-51, to formally clinch the top spot in Group B via a seven-game sweep.
Kim Lee Bayquin, meanwhile, unloaded 13 points for Chiang Kai Shek-A Dragons, who walloped Trinity, 71-47, to bag the top spot in Group B with their sixth straight win.
