Manila eyed to host fight

MANILA, Philippines – It looks like Guillermo Rigondeaux may get his wish after all.

Top Rank Inc. is reportedly working out a future bout between the Cuban champion and Filipino boxing star Nonito Donaire Jr. sometime in 2013.

Peter Musngi, ABS-CBN Vice President for Sports, said Top Rank’s Bob Arum is expected to announce the December 15 bout between Donaire and Jorge Arce on Monday.

"Prospectively 'yung next kay Rigondeaux, hopefully we can hold it here in Manila," he said during Saturday's press conference for Donaire's arrival in Manila.

Rigondeaux, the World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion, has repeatedly been challenging Donaire to a fight.

The Cuban defector, who became champion after just 11 professional fights, went as far as calling Donaire a "coward."

The Filipino Flash, however, said Rigondeaux was only trying to get his attention.

"That's his style kasi ako ang pinakamalaking [fight] niya in terms of finances. Kung akong makakalaban niya, malaking makukuha niya so hahamunin niya ako just like what Bradley was doing to Pacquiao," said Donaire.

Donaire, now the owner of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Council (WBC) diamond, and RING Magazine super bantamweight crowns, said he wants to fight the best in his division before he makes his climb to the featherweight ranks.

That means facing Rigondeaux, WBC champion Abner Mares and super bantamweight campaigner Anselmo Moreno.

"Kahit sino sa kanila, I just want to do my best. Gusto kong makalaban ang pinakamagaling sa boxing in terms of this division, I’m aiming for the best, that's what you get from me," said Donaire.

"If they make me wait then aakyat ako ng timbang."
