MANILA, Philippines – Former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen fired back at his critics for calling him undeserving of the title shot against light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones.
“Welcome to life,” he said in UFC.com. “We don’t deserve things, we get what we get.”
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White has tapped Sonnen and Jones to coach opposing teams in the 17th season of “The Ultimate Fighter” (TUF).
The show culminates with Sonnen fighting Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title on April 27 next year.
But other UFC fighters questioned the title fight.
Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, a former light-heavyweight champion, expressed his frustration.
“With all respect, but for me Chael does not deserve the title shot. I would like to know what he had done in LHW (light-heavyweight) to deserve (the shot),” he said through Twitter.
Another veteran fighter, Dan Henderson, implied that Sonnen talked his way into getting the fight.
“I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for fans and just go to [expletive]-talking school,” Henderson tweeted.
But the trash-talking Sonnen said he is welcome to have a tune-up fight against anyone of his critics.
“I’ve got no problem getting a tune up fight and slapping any one of these guys around, including the Karate Kid (referring to Machida). So not only do they not want to carry the heavy water and fight me, they don’t want to fight Jon Jones. Not one of them called out Jon. The only fighter to call Jones out is me,” he said.
