MANILA, Philippines – Letran guard Kevin Alas, whose turnover late in Game 1 led to their defeat 62-60 defeat to San Beda, promised to do better when they resume their NCAA basketball finals duel against the defending champions on Saturday.

The Knights were just 2 points down with 20 seconds to go in Game 1 when the Lions’ Baser Amer anticipated a pass by Alas.

This led to an interception that ended Letran’s chance of winning the game.

“That’s on me. Nasayang lahat ng effort namin dahil dun sa turnover ko," Alas told The Philippine Star following the game.

“Magsisinungaling ako kung sasabihin kong naka-move on na ako sa turnover ko kanina eh. Ang hirap magmove-on. Siguro kailangan ko lang itulog ‘to, paggising ko isipin ko kung ano ang dapat kong gawin.”

Alas was Letran’s biggest hero in their semi-finals win against San Sebastian.

He exploded with 43 points in their first semifinal game against the Stags, and this started the momentum that pushed Letran to the finals.

The Knights, now facing a 0-1 series deficit in the best-of-3 finals series, will have to beat the Lions in Game 2 to keep their title hopes alive.

Alas said he’ll make sure that Letran will pull off a surprise against the red shirts.

“Babawi ako [sa Game 2],” Alas said.

Game 2 will be at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

Game time begins at 6 p.m.
