Pinoy GM to take part in Legazpi chess exhibition

MANILA, Philippines – Grand Master (GM) Jayson Gonzales will challenge Bicolano woodpushers in a simultaneous exhibition on October 20 at the Ibalong Centrum for Recreation in Legazpi City.

Gonzales is the coach of national Philippine chess teams who notched impressive results in the recent 40th World Chess Olympiad in Turkey.

Assisting Gonzales in the chess exhibition is newly crowned Woman Fide Master Janelle Mae Frayna, one of the top scorers in the Philippine women’s team.

Frayna also gained two norms as Woman International Master, leaving her one norm short of the full title.

Around 100 to 200 players from various schools and chess clubs are expected to see action in the exhibition, which offers a total cash pot of P25,000.

Players who want to join must have an NCFP standard rating not exceeding 2160. The format is seven round Swiss with 25 minutes of time control.

The event will be sanctioned by the NCFP and participants will receive free FIDE rapid/blitz ratings.
