MANILA, Philippines – En fuego!
Spanish import Rufino Sanchez was too hot to handle for the debuting Sta. Lucia side as Stallion Penson scored a 6-nil win Tuesday night in the 2012 United Football League Cup at the Marikina Sports Complex.
The 25-year old Spanish striker, who is on loan from Spain’s third division club Internacional de Madrid CF, scored five goals to power Stallion to its first win after opening the tournament with a shocking 0-2 loss to Phil. Army in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Sanchez found the back of the net as early as the tenth minute mark of the match and scored three more goals before the break to give Stallion a commanding 4-0 lead at the half.
Sta. Lucia, which is composed of former Stallion players, failed to extinguish the Stallion’s fiery Sanchez as he scored one more from a quick throw-in in the 67th minute to tie Sudanese Izzo El Habib of Global FC with the most goals in the tournament.
Korean Young Jae Pi joined Sanchez in the score sheet in the 85th minute as Stallion jumped to second spot tied with defending cup champion Phil. Air Force in Group D with 3 points apiece on strength of 1-win, 1-loss card but ahead on goal difference.
In the nightcap, Nomads luckily escaped with a victory relying on Pachanga’s costly error to climb to solo lead in Group C.
Pachanga skipper Yves Ashime yielded an own goal in the 30th minute after his pass intended for their keeper Enrique Ortiz went in.
Pachanga bungled a couple of chances to either tie or take the lead in the second half to surrender full three points to Nomads, who are now the surprise leader of Group C with six points.
With the loss, Pachanga slid to second spot with three points tied with Loyola Meralco Sparks who got a game on hand.
UFL action resumes on Thursday with Forza facing Dolphons United at 7pm to be followed by the match between the Green Archers United-Globe and Diliman Victory Liner at 9pm. Both matches will be held at the University of Makati football field.
