MANILA, Philippines – World Boxing Organization (WBO) president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel believes the bantamweight title clash between Filipino fighter AJ “Bazooka” Banal and Thai fighter Pungluang Sor Singyu is an important fight for his organization.
Speaking with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, Valcarcel described the Banal-Sor Singyu fight as “huge.”
“It is very good for the Philippines and very good for boxing,” Valcarcel said.
Banal and Sor Singyu will headline Pinoy Pride XVII on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena. The fight card will also feature a featherweight bout between Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and Daniel Ruiz of Mexico.
Valcarcel is expecting an exciting fight between Banal and Sor Singyu, who are ranked first and second, respectively, by the WBO in the bantamweight division.
“(Sor Singyu) can fight. He’s strong. But Banal, he can box and he has a great opportunity beacuse they are fighting in Manila,” Valcarcel said. “I can’t pick a winner because it will be an even fight.”
Valcarcel also congratulated ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer for putting together “the biggest fight in Manila in the last 10 years.”
Valcarcel, however, will not be watching the fight live as he is set to attend the WBO Annual Convention in Florida.
