MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum believes a fight between Filipino fight king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and undefeated light-welterweight boxer Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios will be a a huge draw in the box office.
This is in light of Rios’ explosive seventh-round technical knockout victory over Mike Alvarado last Saturday in what was a sure contender for Fight of the Year.
“Pacquiao and Rios would be an unbelievably huge draw, because people would know that they would see crazy, wild action,” Arum said in an interview with Boxing Scene.
Pacquiao is set to fight rival Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth time this December, but has already announced that he will fight again on April 20.
Arum, however, stressed that the first choice for Pacquiao will still be a mega-fight with undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“Mayweather is always the first choice,” Arum said.
Another possibility is for Rios to fight the winner of the Pacquiao-Marquez bout, according to Arum.
“Obviously, I would have to first talk with Pacquiao and Marquez, but I would think that it would be a big possibility,” Arum said. “If we can’t do it, then maybe we’ll do a rematch (against Alvarado).”
“There is pressure to do a rematch, but obviously, boxing is a business. If there is a possibility of Rios fighting Pacquiao or Marquez for really bonanza money, how can you take the risk by putting him in with Alvarado again where he may lose out on that payday?” he questioned.
