MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum is aiming to put together a super bantamweight clash between Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and Mexican brawler Jorge Arce later this year.
Donaire is coming off a ninth-round technical knockout victory over Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka last Saturday in Carson, California, although he injured his left hand in the win.
“If the left hand is okay, then I will try to have him fight again before the end of the year, in Mexico, at that new arena in Mexico City, against Arce,” Arum told Boxing Scene.
The fight may be held on December 15, though Arce has said he is planning to return late November.
Donaire, however, has said he may take the rest of the year off after fighting three times already in 2012.
“I gotta rest,” he told RingTV. “I got nine stitches in my hand. I just gotta rest. I wanna fight as much as I can this year, if I could fight in December... but right now, the hand is crazy.”
“Rest is the main thing right now,” he added.
Arce has been touted as a potential opponent for Donaire for some time now. The two camps came close to agreeing on a fight early this year, but Arce priced himself out of the fight, eventually leading Donaire to battle Nishioka instead.
