Donaire more skilled than Pacquiao, says trainer
MANILA, Philippines - Bantamweight champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. is a more skillful boxer than current pound-for-pound champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, according to trainer Robert Garcia.
Garcia, who trains Donaire, Antonio Margarito and Brandon Rios, said in an interview with FightHype.com that he respects Pacquiao's achievements, but Donaire is more skilled as a boxer.
"What Pacquiao has done and what he has going on right now is something that we might not see again. We might not see another fighter, Filipino or Mexican or whatever, we might never see that again from a boxer, at least not anytime soon," Garcia said.
"But if we talk about skills, I'm not afraid to say that Nonito is more skillful," he added.
Garcia said Donaire will be able to dominate "two or three more weight divisions."
"I don't know how far he could go, but I think at least two or three. I think he does have the power to be able to dominate," Garcia added.
Donaire will defend his bantamweight belts against unbeaten Omar Narvaez on October 22, but plans to move in weight after the fight.
"(The fight with Narvaez) might not be a mega-fight, but it's still big for Nonito, because he knows what winning the fight brings him next," Garcia said. "There's big fights at 122 (lbs) that are already being talked about, so he knows the importance of this fight."
Donaire recently held a public workout in the Undisputed Gym in San Carlos, California.
