MANILA, Philippines - John Bryan Otico and Jenni Celine Dizon came away with two victories each to dominate the Philta-Palawan Pawnshop Regional Age-Group Championships presented by Babolat Mindanao leg at the Eco 2 Tennis Club in Davao City over the weekend.
The third-seeded Otico rallied from a shutout loss in the opening set with a sweep of the next two, including a thrilling decider, 0-4, 4-1, 10-8, as he upended top seed Fel Christian Lopez to snatch the boys’ 16-and-under crown.
The 13-year-old find from PTA Davao earlier subdued Lordrenz Pacheco, 4-1, 4-1, to annex the 14-and-under title in the three-day event serving as the 11th leg of Philta’s (Philippine Tennis Association) nationwide talent-search.
“The series of tournaments here in Mindanao is a big boost to the sport and to our young players since they don’t have to go to Manila to join quality tournaments,” said Philta regional vice president Carol Angel.
The next stop is in Kidapawan City on Oct. 12-15. Listup is ongoing with deadline set Oct. 10 at 12 noon. For details, call tournament in-charge Bobby Mangunay at 0195-4046464 or email [email protected]
