MANILA, Philippines – Toshiaki Nishioka may be among the best in the super bantamweight division, but he hasn’t fought anyone like Nonito Donaire yet, according to the Filipino’s trainer.
Donaire’s boxing coach, Robert Garcia, said in RingTV that Nishioka has already grown accustomed to what the super bantamweight division has to offer.
But Garcia claimed that Donaire is a different breed of fighter.
"Inside of the ring, he hasn't been in there with a guy like Nonito. Not with a guy who thinks the way Nonito thinks, and who has the power that he has, and the speed that he has," said Garcia.
Donaire will be staking his World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation titles against Nishioka, the World Boxing Council emeritus champion.
The two fighters will be squaring off at the Home Depot in Carson City, California this weekend.
Garcia said he isn’t asking for a knockout win from Donaire.
“I know that in his mind, and for his fans, that he wants to do it. But if he performs well, and he does what he has done in training, I'll be happy with it," he said.
The Donaire-Nishioka fight card will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday starting 10:15 a.m.
At the main supporting bout is the WBO junior welterweight title eliminator between Brandon Rios and unbeaten contender Mike Alvarado.
