MANILA, Philippines – University of Sto. Tomas (UST) head coach Pido Jarencio received a reprimand from UAAP Commissioner Ato Badolato after his rant against the officiating in Game 1 of the UAAP Season 75 Finals.
Jarencio's Growling Tigers lost to the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 83-78, but afterward, the fiery head coach launched into a tirade against was he perceived as "unfair" officiating against them.
"Ako, diretsahan akong makipag-usap. Hindi patas 'yung tawagan... Unfair naman sa amin. Dahil UST lang ba kami kaya ganoon ang tawagan?" Jarencio said.
"Kailangan pa ba mag-English ako para paboran nila ako? Ganoon ba ang labanan dito? Nasa Pilipinas tayo, dapa tayong mga Pilipino ang mahalin ng mga 'yan," he added.
"Ang ninipis, ang kakapal. Ang ninipis ng tawag, ang kakapal ng mukha."
Jarencio was also seen confronting a referee at the end of the game after one of his player, Jeric Teng, was not awarded free throws despite seemingly getting fouled at the buzzer.
Badolato informed ABS-CBN’s TJ Manotoc that Jarencio was issued a "stern reprimand" because of his actions.
"We are giving you a stern reprimand and a warning that a repetition will merit a stronger penalty," Badolato said in his letter to Jarencio.
In today's PSA Forum, Badolato said the referees had a “credible” performance in Game 1 of the Finals.
"There will be lapses, but the referees will not side with either team," Badolato said, as quoted by Abac Cordero of the Philippine Star.
Badolato acknowledged that there was "slight contact" between Jarencio and one of the referees during the end game, but he would not "penalize a school by suspending the coach."
The commissioner also warned that the referees will watch the coaches' actions in Game 2, which takes place Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum. -- Report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News; with a report from Abac Cordero, The Philippine Star
