MANILA, Philippines – Ginebra point guard LA Tenorio won his first Player of the Week award as a member of the perennial crowd favorites after leading the Kings to back-to-back victories in the opening week of the PBA Philippine Cup.
Tenorio, who landed with Ginebra in a blockbuster off-season trade, stepped up in crunch time in the Kings’ two games this week.
In their season opener against GlobalPort, Tenorio showed off his playmaking skills as he dished off 10 assists, four of which came in the final five minutes as the Kings held off Batang Pier’s rally. Ginebra won, 110-90.
Against Rain or Shine, Tenorio scored 20 points, including five in the final two minutes to lead Ginebra to a 98-94 triumph.
Tenorio told PBA.ph that he is still adjusting to Ginebra’s system.
“First of all, gusto kong magpasalamat sa mga teammates ko for the patience, kasi they really helped me to adjust right away sa system ng Ginebra,” he said. “Basta ako, every game I will play my best to help the team win.”
Ginebrea head coach Siot Tanquingcen said Tenorio’s performances in their wins last week showed why he is “considered one of the top, if not the top, point guards of the league.”
“He does so many things. Ang dami talagang nagagawa, nakakatulong sa team,” Tanquingcen said.
With Tenorio at the helm, Ginebra took an early lead in the Philippine Cup, leading all teams with a 2-0 record.
