MANILA – World super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. has plans to move to the featherweight division in the near future.
Donaire, who is scheduled to defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) titles against Toshiaki Nishioka, believes that his body is prepared for the climb in weight.
“Moving up to 126 pounds is another option that we have. We are looking to stay at 122 for a bit but I can work my body to be ready for 126,” Donaire said in Boxing Scene.
He, however, said he remains open to facing other super bantamweight champions before he moves on to the featherweight division.
The other champions Donaire is referring to are Abner Mares, the World Boxing Council (WBC) 122-pound king, and Guillermo Rigondeaux, the World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantam king.
“There are fighters at 122 that I have not faced yet and they know who they are and I am fine with facing any of them.”
