MANILA – Defending champion Talk ‘N Text hacked out a 112-110 overtime win against Meralco in their opening game Friday night in the PBA Philippine Cup.
After squandering a 24-point lead, the Tropang Texters held off the Bolts as Jason Castro secured the win for Talk ‘N Text by sinking both of his charities near the end of the game.
According to the league’s website, JayR Reyes sent the contest into overtime with a lay-up for Meralco, making it 99-all.
The Bolts held a slim 106-105 lead with 2:03 left in extra time.
Talk ‘N Text surged back on Castro’s triple, 108-106. Jared Dillinger extended the lead to 110-106 via a long jumper.
Meralco fought back through Solomon Mercado's three pointer, and Ronjay Buenafe’s charity shot tied the game 110-all with 14 ticks left.
Buenafe fouled Castro, allowing Talk ‘N Text Point guard to peg the final scores on the stripe.
Dillinger led the Tropang Texters with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Six of his team mates also churned out double figures.
Reyes top-scored for the Bolts with 25 points. He also had 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block.
Meralco rookie Cliff Hodge Hodge also had an impressive game, finishing with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in his debut.
