MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum said he was pleased with Nonito Donaire Jr.’s preparations for the Toshiaki Nishioka fight.
Arum told Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz that the Filipino Flash is currently in impressive condition as his World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) 122-pound title-defense approaches.
The Top Rank Inc. executive said Donaire showed “unbelievable strength," adding that this will come handy when the Filipino slugs it out with an elite fighter like Nishioka.
Donaire will fight Nishioka on October 13 at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California.
He is entering the ring on an 11-fight winning streak, while Nishioka boasts of an 8-year, 16-bout win streak that includes eight world title fights.
Arum said the weigh-in will take place next Friday in Los Angeles “probably at the ESPN restaurant while ESPN has really gotten behind the fight.”
He said there’s “a lot of interest, real grassroots interest in the fight and everybody is excited while ESPN is giving him (Donaire) a lot of coverage.”
