Seeks public support to clean up Pasig River
MANILA, Philippines – “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao will join more than 120,000 runners on Sunday’s “Run for Pasig River,” which seeks to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of participants in a foot race.
Pacquiao, a former head of the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) Task Force Kalikasan during the Arroyo administration, is batting for public support to help efforts to clean up the Pasig River.
“Nakikiisa po ako sa lahat ng gustong malinis ang Ilog Pasig. Sana po pangalagaan natin ang Mother Earth. Ang ating mundo ay bahagi ng ating buhay kaya kailangan nating pangalagaan at linisin ang ating kapaligiran,” said the boxing champion.
Pacquiao, who is set to clash against Mexico’s Antonio Margarito on November 13, will take part in the 10K category of the race.
More than 120,000 runners are expected to participate in the 3K, 5K and 10K categories of the Pasig River fun run.
There will be 3 starting points:
- 3K in Diokno corner Bayshore Boulevard in SM Mall of Asia;
- 5K in Vicente Sotto corner Magdalena Jalandoni in CCP CompleX;
- Ayala corner Makati Avenue in Makati City.
All of the runners will converge in one finish line at the SM Mall of Asia.
ABS-CBN Foundation managing director Gina Lopez said Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) has successfully hit their target.
She added they have even exceeded it with support coming from schools, companies, the government and even communities in Paco and Baseco, both in Manila. Religious group El Shaddai is also sending 50,000 runners in the 5K run.
“This run is literally kapit-bisig for all sectors. It will be really, really amazing. If we get international recognition by breaking the world record, all of us are saying to the world that ‘We want the Pasig River clean’,” said Lopez.
The current record is held by the 1988 “Bay to Breakers” race in San Francisco, USA, which set the mark with 110,000 runners.
The P250 registration fee of each runner will go to the river’s clean-up fund. The ABS-CBN Foundation has set a 7-year time table to help rehabilitate the Pasig River.
Among the celebrities joining the 10.10.10 run are are Piolo Pascual, Karylle, Luis Manzano, Pokwang, Angel Aquino, Cheska Garcia, Aaron Atayde, Jovit Baldovino, Melay Cantiveros and Jason Francisco. -- With a report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
