Senador finishes 4th in HK Open chess
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino International Master (IM) Emmanuel "Manny" Senador wound up fourth overall in the just-concluded 2012 Hongkong International Open Chess Championship on Wednesday at the University of Hong Kong.
The Iloilo native collected 6.5 points on five wins, one loss and three draws.
He was in a group of players with 6.5 points along with fourth placer IM Marcos Llaneza Vega of Spain and fifth placer Baining Chen of China.
But Senador, who beat Candidate Master Bharat Arun of India, took the fourth position by virtue of his superior tie break points.
"Once again our flag has been raised in this foreign land after knowing that our Filipino kababayan Manny Senador finished fourth overall," said former chess player and now Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Javier Colmenares.
IM Zhou Yang-fan of England, Jinshi Bai and Li Bo of China shared the top spot with seven points each.
Zhou beat IM Oliver Dimakiling of the Philippines, Li toppled US chess master Alberto Rivera of the Philippines and Bai nipped Chen.
With the setbacks, the Mandaluyong ace Rivera finished with six points, good for a share of seventh to 10th place.
Davao City pride Dimakiling had 5.5 points to land at 11th to 16th place. -- By Marlon Bernardino
