MANILA, Philippines – Antipolo City’s top chess player Franz Barreto won the first ever Grand Knights Chess Club (GKCC) tournament last Saturday in Quiapo, Manila.
The event was dubbed “Last Saturday Businessmen, Retirees, Executives and Professionals (BREP) Rapid Chess Open.”
Barreto, a former player of the University of the Philippines, defeated Bong David in the sixth and final round to capture the title and the top prize of P6,000.
He finished a full point ahead of Fide Master Christopher Castellano, who settled for a draw with Lito Dormitorio to go home with the runner’s-up purse of P4,000.
Dormitorio, Jun Whigan of Batangas and Dandel Fernandez of the Novaliches Novelty Chess Club shared third to fifth places with four points. They each brought home P2000.
Grand Master (GM) Mark Paragua and GM-elect Ronald Dableo graced the said chessfest. By Marlon Bernardino
