SPICE Chess: So splits point with Azerbaijan GM

MANILA -- Filipino teenage Grandmaster Wesley So posted a draw in his match against fellow GM Rauf Mamedov of Azerbaijan in the 9th Round of the 2009 Susan Polgar Institute Chess for Excellence (SPICE) Cup Chess Championship at the Texas Tech University, Texas.
According to sports website BilliardPhilippines.com, So agreed to split the point with Mamedov after 17 moves of the Sicilian Defense.
It is So’s 8th draw in nine outings for a total of 4 points. He is now tied at 5th to 6th placers along with last year’s SPICE Cup co-champ American GM Varuzhan Akobian who beat Norwegian GM Jon Ludvig Hammer.
Top seed Russian GM Dmitry Andreikin split the point with Ukrainian GM Yuriy Kuzubov in the ninth round.
GMs Kuzubov and Andreikin shared 1st to 2nd placers with identical 5 points while GMs Hammer and Memedov are tied at 3rd to 4th place with 4.5 points each.
