Paragua to grace 'Last Saturday' chessfest

MANILA, Philippines – The newly formed Grand Knights Chess Club (GKCC) will hold its first ever tournament on Saturday, September 29, at its headquarters at 359 Nepomuceno St. in Quiapo, Manila.

The tournament will be called “Last Saturday Businessmen, Retirees, Executives and Professionals (BREP) Rapid Chess Open.”

Grand Master (GM) Mark Paragua will grace the tournament and is expected to encourage participants in the grassroots competition to continue to play chess. He will also share some secrets to his rise as one of the top woodpushers in the Philippines.

The tournament is open to all businessmen, retirees, executives and professionals. The one-day event will be played in a six-round, Swiss system with a time control of 25 minutes per player.

Titled women executives and professionals are also invited to compete. Special invitations will be given to selected National Masters.

Cash prizes for the winners are: P6000 for the champion; P4000 for the second placer; P3000 for the third placer; P2000 for the fourth placer and P1000 for the fifth placer.

The champion will also receive a trophy.

Registration fee is P1,000. This includes free meals, drinks, snacks and membership fees. Registration starts at 9 a.m. on a first come, first serve basis. The competition starts at 11 a.m.
