MANILA – Rain or Shine had a twice-to-beat edge but took no chances and finished the GlobalPort in just one game, 108-106, on Thursday to move to the semifinals of the PBA Governors' Cup.

Gabe Norwood had only 9 points for the Elasto Painters, but scored big against the Batang Pier by nailing a dagger three with just 17 ticks remaining.

This enabled the defending champions to take a 107-103 lead that broke GlobalPort’s resolve.
Arizona Reid had 25 points for the Elasto Painters, who fought their way out of a 12-point deficit in the second half.

Ryan Arana and Jervy Cruz made significant contributions in the fourth quarter where Rain or Shine outshot GlobalPort, 31-28.

Arana finished with 16 points, while Cruz had 12 markers, eight of them coming in the final period. Paul Lee, who failed to complete the end of regulation due to a calf injury, scored 14.

“The important thing is we hit some big shots. Ryan hit some big shots and Gabe hit the biggest shot, I think, and we were able to ride out a win over a ballclub which seems to be getting better every game,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao in the league website.

Guiao added that they refused to make the same mistake last conference when they were swept in two games by Ginebra in the quarterfinals.

“The memory of the last conference is still fresh in our minds, so there was a little bit of pressure,” he said. “Globalport was also playing well and they really had a chance to win, so the thought was bothering us.”

The Elasto Painters managed to pull through despite making only 16 of their 43 free throw attempts. They were also outrebounded 47-53 and made only 36 of 89 field goal attempts.

But GlobalPort coach Junel Baculi got ejected after incurring his second technical foul in the third quarter.

“It was a big break for us, coach Junel Baculi being ejected,” said Guiao.
