MANILA, Philippines – Senator Manny Villar is calling on his fellow government officials and those in the private sector to increase their support for Filipino athletes, particularly those in disciplines “where we can excel in the international arena.”
Villar is specifically asking for greater support for billiards, not only in the elite level but also in the grassroots.
“Gaya ng palagi kong sinasabi, itong bilyar ay sport na akmang-akma sa ating mga Pilipino,” Villar said in a statement.
“Ito ay nalalaro ng bata, matanda, babae, lalaki,” he added, noting that several Filipino cue artists have made their mark in the international stage.
Villar has thrown his support behind billiards and holds a yearly competition called the Villards Cup, wherein Filipino cue artists can showcase and pit their skills against each other.
The latest edition of the Villards Cup was held last Sunday at the Starmall in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.
“Villards Cup is one of the sports-oriented programs of the Villar Foundation to encourage the youth to engage in sprots and keep them away from the streets and illegal drugs,” said Villar Foundation managing director Cynthia Villar.
Sixteen pool players from different parts of Bulacan qualified in this Villards Cup leg, where they are vying for the cash prizes worth almost P300,000.
