MANILA, Philippines – The defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws bucked a determined National University (NU) squad, 58-50, to complete a sweep of the elimination round of the UAAP Season 75 women’s basketball tournament last Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Lady Tams finished the elimination round with an immaculate 14-0 record. With their sweep, they automatically qualify for the Finals with a thrice-to-beat advantage.
Allana Lim had a double-double of 23 points and 11 boards to lead the Lady Tams, while Marilourd Borja had a stellar all-around game of 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three blocks.
The Lady Tams had to overcome a determined effort by the Lady Bulldogs, who drew 18 points from Risa Paig. Carmina Laquindanum tallied a double-double of 11 points and 15 boards.
The game was close all the way, featuring eight deadlocks and five lead changes. But the Lady Tams were the more steady team in the second half, led by Borja’s all-around effort.
The Lady Tams finished with a 35.6% shooting clip, just slightly better than NU’s 33.9%. But FEU took care of the ball better, tallying 20 turnovers to 31 from the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Tams also took advantage of NU’s miscues as they tallied 18 turnover points.
With their loss, the Lady Bulldogs finished the elimination round with a 7-7 record, tied with the Ateneo Lady Eagles.
The Lady Tams’ sweep means that the women’s playoffs will follow a step-ladder format. Thus, the Lady Bulldogs will battle the Lady Eagles in a knockout game to determine the fourth seed.
The winner of the knockout game will go on to face the third-seeded Adamson Lady Falcons, and the winner of that series will go on to face the De La Salle Lady Archers, who have a twice-to-beat advantage.
