Why Bob Arum won’t finance Pacquiao fight in Manila

Top Rank Inc.’s Bob Arum said Manny Pacquiao has made it clear he doesn’t want to fight Jeff Horn in Australia, given the way the judging turned out in the first bout.

Pacquiao lost a controversial unanimous decision to Horn in Brisbane last July, a result that was blasted by most fight aficionados around the world.

But Arum doesn’t support the proposal featuring Pacquiao in a homecoming fight in the Philippines.

“He wants to fight in the Philippines and with the peso being P52 to the dollar. How the hell is everybody going to get paid, let alone him?" the veteran promoter said in a story posted on BoxingScene.com.

In his fight in Brisbane, Pacquiao was guaranteed $10 million.

"I would love to do a big fight for him in Manila or some place else in the Philippines, but the problem is don't expect me to pay for it," Arum said, adding that even the Philippine government, through the Department of Tourism, isn’t willing to shoulder the expenses required to host a Pacquiao bout.

"The tourism board in the Philippines has told us they'll do everything to help promote the fight except put up money. You've got to respect that," Arum said.
