Jones tells Belfort: I'm no diva
MANILA, Philippines – Light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones asserted that he was not projecting a “rockstar attitude” when he turned down the opportunity to fight Chael Sonnen.
Jones said he just did what’s best for his career.
“Vitor [Belfort] said that I used to be in school that he's not a diva… if I was a diva, I wouldn't be the defending UFC (Ultimate Fighting championship) world champion,” said Jones in a UFC 152 promotional video.
Jones was reacting to Belfort's statement that he must have been still in school when the Brazilian was a reigning UFC champion.
Belfort earlier bragged that in the old days of UFC, fighters never turned down an opportunity to fight.
He even cited that he won the UFC heavyweight tournament with minimal preparation, as opposed to Jones.
Jones recently came under fire for refusing to fight Sonnen on 8 days’ notice.
“I felt that I did the best decision for myself, for my team, for my family,” said Jones.
The light heavyweight champion added that Belfort will soon realize why he became champion.
“He needs to realize I'm not a diva,” said Jones. “If I don't have the heart, the work ethic and determination that I have, then I won't be in this position.”
Jones will be defending his title against Belfort in the main event of UFC 153.
UFC 153 takes place in Canada on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
