MANILA, Philippines – Boxing coach Robert Garcia said his fighter Nonito Donaire Jr. will have to change tactics when fighting a guy like Toshiaki Nishioka.
In an interview with Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz, Garcia said “The Filipino Flash” will need to string his punches together to be successful against Nishioka.
“[He needs to] go out there and have fun and put more punches, two-three combinations together at a time,” said Garcia, who is a former world champion.
During his recent fights, Donaire was seen to have abandoned his jabs and preferred to throw power punches.
Garcia said this might not work against Nishioka, who is acknowledged as the World Boxing Council super bantamweight emeritus champion.
“[He] will have to be very careful because Nishioka is a very experienced fighter,” said the boxing trainer.
Garcia reported that Donaire is currently doing well in his training.
“He’s throwing his jab real good and has good defense,” he said.
