MANILA, Philippines – Seeing that their old game plan never worked against Juan Manuel Marquez, boxing coach Freddie Roach said they will be devising a new strategy for Manny Pacquiao.
“They were all very close fights,” Roach said in Boxing Scene of Pacquiao’s first three fights versus Marquez.
“I’m going to take those game plans and throw them out the window.”
Marquez fought Pacquiao to a controversial draw in 2004. And although the Filipino boxer won their successive encounters in 2004 and 2011 by decisions, he looked vulnerable to the Mexican’s counterpunching abilities.
In all of those fights, Marquez has successfully led Pacquiao directly to his power right hand.
Roach said Pacquiao will need to win by knockout to carve out a convincing win against Marquez.
“To be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world, I think we need to knock this guy out. I don't think we'll win a decision regardless of how the fight goes," Roach said.
