MANILA, Philippines – Smart Gilas Pilipinas will slug it out against Chinese Taipei for a semifinals seat in the 4th FIBA Asia Cup in Tokyo, Japan on Thursday.
Although the Filipinos will face the same squad they defeated in the recent Jones Cup, Gilas coach Chot Reyes said they're not underestimating the Taiwanese.
“I always regard Chinese Taipei as a dangerous opponent much more here where they have the best Chinese Taipei team that I’ve seen. They have their experienced players and their good young talents here,” said Reyes in PBA.ph.
“It’s a match of similar style (of play) and it’s going to be difficult. We have to make sure to play good transition defense and we have to make our shots,” he added.
Gilas plays Chinese Taipei at the Ota Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
Whoever wins the game will have a semifinal date against the winner between Iran and Uzbekistan.
Members of Gilas believe they will win the match despite Chinese Taipei’s fast-paced game.
“Malakas din ang team nila. Magandang lumaro pero kaya natin yon,” said LA Tenorio.
“They never stop moving. They have good shooters and good big men but we’ll see,” said Gabe Norwood.
