MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Freddie Roach believes a mega-fight between Filipino icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr. is possible now that rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has entered the picture.
Roach, who trains Pacquiao, revealed in an interview with Max Boxing that the Filipino fighter was negotiating with 50 Cent, who is one of Mayweather’s closest friends.
“With Mayweather on the horizon possibly because 50 Cent and Manny are talking and there’s negotiations going on, it’s a good sign to me,” Roach said. “They’re talking about the fight. They’re not just being friends and so forth.”
50 Cent started a promotional company, called The Money Team (TMT) Promotions, which he said he will run with Mayweather. Rumors of a rift between the two popped up, however, and TMT Promotions seems to have closed shop.
Last week, it was reported that 50 Cent was in communications with Pacquiao through his advisor, Michael Koncz. Pacquiao confirmed that he and 50 Cent were “talking,” but did not divulge any details.
For Roach, however, the two men can only be talking about one topic: a mega-fight with Mayweather.
“The negotiations, they’re talking about the Mayweather fight. What else would they be talking about?” he said.
“So that’s always a good sign, when there’s talk. Something might happen. I hope it happens before it’s too late.”
Top Rank’s Bob Arum has assured him that he can work with 50 Cent, Roach said.
“He (Arum) said he likes him. ‘I can talk with him, I can negotiate with him.’ And Todd (duBoef) has been talking to him, Mike Koncz has been talking to him,” he added.
It is no secret that there is no love lost between Arum and Mayweather, after Mayweather left Top Rank to take control of his career. But Roach is hopeful that with 50 Cent in charge, the two fighters’ camps can finally come into an agreement.
The trainer related that while speaking with Koncz a few days ago, he had to “excuse himself to take a call” with 50 Cent.
“What else would they be talking about? Let’s face it, they’ve gotta be talking about the Mayweather fight. That’s a good sign,” Roach said.
“Hopefully, the best two fighters in the world will meet soon,” he added.
