MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum criticized his boxer, former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., for putting on a poor fight against Sergio Martinez.
Although he knocked down Martinez in the last round, Chavez lost by unanimous decision to the Argentine champion.
“Because he fought a pathetic fight for most of the fight, and there's no excuse for that. I mean, all credit to Sergio, but Sergio shouldn't have been so dominant through most of the fight, in my opinion,” said Arum in Bad Left Hook.
The Top Rank CEO said the erstwhile unbeaten Chavez looked lost against Martinez.
Arum said the real Chavez only showed up in the last round when he sent Martinez to the canvass. Martinez, however, managed to hold on and survive the round.
"I thought he (Chavez) fought -- up until the last round, he fought a very poor fight. Very poor, aimless fight with no plan, no nothing. Had no answer for the jab, and it wasn't until the 12th round that the real Chavez that we know emerged," Arum said.
