MANILA, Philippines – The Informatics Icons and the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) Engineers made their presence felt in the 10th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup after posting back-to-back victories in the basketball tournament.
Joseph Marquez and Mark Montuano scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, as the Icons stopped the Arellano University Chiefs, 77-62, at the St. Placid Gym of the San Beda College-Mendiola campus.
The Icons’ latest win came after they had earlier defeated the Trinity University of Asia Stallions, 87-59, and allowed them to post their third win in four games in Group B.
But the Chiefs are still ahead in their bracket even as they suffered their first loss in five outings.
Meanwhile, the TIP Engineers, led by Kim Medina’s 18 points, banked on their outside shooting to fend off the De La Salle Green Archers, 76-68, in the cagefest supported by Gerry’s Grill.
The Engineers, who have a 3-3 slate in Group A, leaned on triples from Joshua Saret and TH Tumalip in shattering a 59-all deadlock.
The Green Archers, with Jason Perkins scoring 27 points, trailed with a 2-3 card.
In the juniors division, Far Eastern University-FERN (3-1) got 28 points from Jason Aquino as they downed St. Joseph-Bulanca, 68-62, in Group B.
San Benildo (4-1) drew 20 points from Jason Cervantes as it upset the Letran Squires, 82-77, in overtime.
Meanwhile, Adamson won by default over the University of Santo Tomas.
