Goalball team to open PH campaign

The goalball team will open the Philippines’ campaign in the ninth ASEAN Para Games, which comes off the wraps at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

The Philippines looks to win 27 gold medals, 11 more than its haul in Singapore in 2015.

Goalball coach Freddie Estacion hopes to make the most out of his team's return to competition by gunning for the title after last participating in the 2005 Games in Manila, where his side won bronze.

The team will be spearheaded by Jomer Anden, Lemuel Garcia and Jolan Camacho with James dela Cerna, Jefferson Balenton and Jeff Fernando as the other members in a sport where defending champion Thailand and host Malaysia are expected to contend for the mint.

Partially blind chesser and flag-bearer Minandro Ridor will lead the Philippine delegation during the traditional parade of countries, a role he received after emerging as the best performing Filipino in the 2015 Games.

Philippine chef de mission Ral Rosario is optimistic the country will hit its gold target.

Joining Ridor and Rosario in leading the 111-member delegation are Philippine Paralympic Committee president Michael Barredo, board member Kiko Diaz, and commissioner Arnold Agustin of the Philippine Sports Commission.

A total of 368 gold medals will be staked in 16 sports.
