MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines bowed to Indonesia in their Davis Cup tie after late replacement Jeson Patrombon lost in straight sets to Christopher Rungkat to finalize the Indons' 3-2 victory yesterday in Jakarta.

With their win, Indonesia gained promotion to the Asia-Oceania Zone Group I in the Davis Cup. The Philippines, meanwhile, will stay at Group II.

Rungkat, Indonesia's top player, routed Patrombon 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 in the rubber match at the Gelora Bung Karno tennis stadium.

Francis Casey Alcantara defeated Sunu Wahyu Trijati, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-4, in a non-bearing match.

Patrombon was a late replacement for Treat Huey, who suffered an injury to his shoulder in the first set of the Philippines' doubles loss last Saturday.

It was Patrombon's first match in the Group II final.

"The tie could have gone either way if we only got the breaks," said Philippines Davis Cup administrator Randy Villanueva in an e-mail to The Philippine Star.

But team manager and sponsor Jean Henri Lhuiller maintained that they are "very proud of the team."

"Everybody played a bearing game and have important roles, everybody tried hard and gave their best," he said. – Reports from Agence France-Presse and The Philippine Star
