MANILA, Philippines – World junior flyweight champion Jhonriel Casimero will defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt this November in the Philippines against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
According to a PhilBoxing report, Casimero will defend his title against a “Top 10 IBF-ranked fighter.”
“It will definitely be held in the Philippines,” said Casimero’s promoter, Sammy Gello-ani, in the report.
Casimero won the interim IBF junior flyweight belt when the knocked out Argentina’s Luis Lazarte in his hometown of Argentina. That bout is now infamous for the riot that happened after the fight, when Lazarte’s supporters threw debris inside the ring as Casimero and his team ran for cover.
Casimero’s first title defense also happened on the road, when he beat the erstwhile undefeated Pedro Guevara for the regular IBF junior flyweight belt last August via split decision.
This time, Casimero will defend his belt at home, with Gello-Ani looking at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City as a possible venue.
“This will be confirmed after we solidify the opponent and the approval of the IBF organization,” Gello-Ani said.
Gello-Ani is working with Shape-Up Boxing Promotions president Anson Tiu Co and international promoter Sampson Lewkowicz to put the event together.
