MANILA, Philippines – Manchester native Michael Bisping wants a shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the near future.
Bisping is set to fight Brian Stann in one of the supporting bouts of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 152 on September 22, and a win against Stann should make him the No. 1 title contender.
"If I beat Brian Stann, I deserve the title shot," Bisping said in Sports Illustrated.
He said his impressive fight record and his list of victims are convincing enough to merit him a title shot against Silva.
"I've been at this the longest, I have the most impressive resume among the fighters. Who has Chris Weidman beat? Mark Muñoz? That's not enough to merit a title shot. I've been at this a lot longer, I've fought the biggest names, I'm getting better and better. If I win, the title shot should be mine," he said.
Silva is slated to fight Stephen Bonnar in October and could be heading for a dream fight against fellow UFC superstar Georges St.-Pierre in the near future.
But Bisping is unfazed.
"There's always the chance [Carlos] Condit defeats GSP (Georges St.-Pierre) and the Silva fight's off," said Bisping.
"I think GSP will take him to the floor and hold him there and win a decision, but you can't count Bisping out. Now, that said, if I beat Stann, I think I deserve the title shot,” he added.
