Palmer receives US Congressional Gold Medal
MANILA, Philippines – Golfing legend Arnold Palmer has received the United States Congress’ Gold Medal.
It is the Congress’ highest civilian award of appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
Palmer was recognized for his “service to the nation in promoting excellence and good sportsmanship in golf.”
The undisputed king of Augusta National, Palmer was a force of personality in the 1950s and '60s and is still considered one of the first big sports stars of the television age.
Originally awarded to military leaders, the gold medal is now awarded occasionally to others deemed to be worthy by the US Congress. -- Mornings @ ANC, September 13, 2012
